If it seems like popularity has soared overnight, that is because it has; CBD has plenty of reported benefits. So it’s no wonder you might be considering trying CBD out. As someone new to CBD, you may feel overwhelmed by all the information out there, especially when it comes to the dosage. For instance, how much CBD is enough to relax?
Since there is no standard amount, the commonly recommended dosage for general wellness is low—around 5-10 milligrams per day.

Will CBD Help With Relaxation?
Research is currently still out on whether or not CBD can help people relax. The amount of research required to make a solid claim is not available. However, what evidence is out there suggests two things:
CBD May Have Anti-Anxiety Effects
You need to find the right dose in order for CBD to work the way you want. In a 2020 review of the dosage and efficacy of CBD in adults, it was found that acute doses work best for anxiety, as well as psychotic and substance use disorders [1].
However, the FDA also reports that CBD does have some adverse effects, including agitation [2]. How this happens and why is not currently known, though research is underway to figure out what influences the side effects.
Therefore, if you plan on using CBD for relaxation, keep in mind that pinpointing the dosage that is best for you is going to take some trial and error.

How Much CBD Is Enough To Relax?
Since CBD has only been recently approved by the FDA for certain forms of epilepsy, there is still so much that researchers and medical professionals do not know. Research has indicated that, in most clinical trials, CBD is well tolerated among various populations and has minimal adverse effects. For instance, a study published in 2021 reported real-world evidence that showed that those who took CBD for anxiety and depression had more long-term positive effects than negative ones [3].
In the above-mentioned clinical study, the researchers used 0.5-1.0 mg of THC or 20-25 mg of CBD on patients. That said, for most studies, the dosage ranges between 10-800 mg a day [4].
Certain studies have even attempted to push the upper limits of CBD tolerance. In one review, an individual took 1,200 mg a day for psychosis and saw an improvement [5]. Another study looked at people with schizophrenia. Symptoms improved when taking 40 to 1,280 mg of CBD a day [6].

How To Figure Out Your CBD Dosage
CBD products come in many shapes and forms these days. Gummies, capsules, tinctures, creams—you name it, it’s been done. There are shelves upon shelves of options, so how do you find the right supplement and dosage that meets your individual needs? As mentioned earlier, a lot of it is going to be trial and error. You can consider the dosages used in clinical trials that had an effect, but going that high that soon is not recommended.
There are also CBD isolates, broad spectrum, and full spectrum options, all of which may interact with your system differently.
Thus, the recommended course of action is to first speak with a medical professional. Ask about your options. From there, decide on a product. Choose one with a low dose that can be scaled, such as a capsule or sublingual tincture. The amount of CBD per dose is usually written on the label.
For example, if you choose a CBD oil with 10 mg per dose, start with that on day one. Monitor the effects and go from there. Increase the dose every day (or every other day) until you reach the desired result—relaxation.
For some, that may be 10 mg a day. For others, it could be 100 mg.

What May Affect My Dosage?
Finding the correct amount of CBD for the desired effect may seem challenging at first. You will need to start low and work up to the point where the effect is tangible. That said, there are some factors that may alter your dosage. Certain medical conditions may alter how CBD works for you. For example, people with epilepsy may need a higher dose than those who wish to control their anxiety.
Another consideration is your weight. For example, Epidiolex doses go according to the weight of the person taking it. Those who weigh less end up taking smaller amounts of CBD than someone larger.
Lastly, consider the form of CBD you are taking and the individual dosage recommendations of each product. A capsule is going to have a different dose compared to a sublingual tincture or an edible.
Are There Any Side Effects To CBD?
Although research is looking into the long-term effects of CBD on the human body, results are currently limited. That said, there are some possible risks. CBD has been shown to interact with certain medications, particularly those that come with a grapefruit warning on the label. If you are taking any medications, it is best to consult with a medical professional about your options.
Furthermore, the cannabidiol may also cause:
- Drowsiness
- Diarrhea
- Appetite changes
- Agitation
- Irritation
These side effects may not happen to you. CBD may interact with you differently than it does with someone else, which is it is important to dial in the correct dosage as soon as possible.
